Geography trip to Dorset

Geography trip to Dorset

Fifteen Year 12 Geography students visited the Dorset coastline as part of their A Level fieldwork and NEA requirements, completing three of the four mandatory fieldwork days. Despite challenging conditions, including torrential rain and strong winds, students collected data accurately and responsibly at locations including Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Chesil Beach and Boscombe. Fieldwork activities included measuring beach profiles and sediment size, as well as collecting human geography data relating to comparative deprivation in Boscombe.

During the evenings, students took part in structured seminars alongside other Harris Academies, including Chobham, Chafford Hundred and Harris Sutton. Sessions focused on planning enquiry questions, analysing data sets using statistical tests such as Mann–Whitney U, Chi-squared and Spearman’s Rank, and developing understanding of the carbon and water cycles to support subsequent fieldwork. Throughout the three days, students worked well together, engaged positively with staff and peers from other schools, and represented the school extremely well under difficult weather conditions.
